Seismic waves (P ... upper right, SH ... lower right) generating different particle motion traveling through earth. As a consequence, they are influenced by different rock properties such as compressional and shear stiffness. Combining the two wave types in interpretation allows an almost comprehensive description of elastic rock properties.
