The MASW method is based on the dispersion of surface waves (Rayleigh waves). This type of waves shows frequency dependent propagation velocities. Refraction and reflection seismic tests use the properties of body waves in the opposite.
The Measurements are performed stepwise along a profile line and provide the s-wave velocity distribution with depth along this profile. An impulse source (e.g. weight drop, hammer) and several geophones arranged in one line are the essential testing equipment.
In order to accelerate the progression of the measurement the geophones can be mounted on a landstreamer and pulled by a vehicle.
