In order to perform seismic tomography between boreholes, a borehole source and a borehole receiver are needed. Source and receiver should be optimized for P-waves since tomography is in general based on the velocity of P-waves.
The quality and resolution of a tomographic survey depends strongly on a good ray coverage of the slice investigated. Therefore a huge amount of seismic traces needs to be acquired. The use of a multiple sensor array is strongly recommended. It reduces the survey time significantly.
P-Wave
Geotomographie recommends a P-wave sparker in combination with a string of 12 or 24 hydrophones (spacing of 1 or 2 m) for tomography. In case a client wishes to use the source also for crosshole testing a Borehole Impacter Source BIS with the capability of generating SH- and P-waves can be used.
